Accessibility Laws
The Accessible Cities Alliance is eager to serve as a vital coalition of resources and partnerships which will work to enhance awareness of and compliance with disability issues and laws.
The Americans With Disabilties Act (ADA)
General Information about the ADA
Passed into law in July 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act provides civil protections to individuals with disabilities. It guarantees equal opportunity for these individuals in public accommodations, employment, transportation, State and local government services, and telecommunications.
To be compliant, a public accommodation must meet specific guidelines put forth in the ADA. Mainly, the four most important requirements of the law focus on these areas: accessible parking, approach and entrance; access to goods and services; access to restrooms, and any other measures necessary.
Examples of public accommodations include, but are not limited to: restaurants, hotels, retail stores, medical offices, theaters, pharmacies, museums, libraries, parks, private schools, day care centers, etc.
Fair, swift and effective enforcement of this landmark civil rights legislation is a high priority of Federal and State governments, as well as Centers for Independent Living and advocacy groups across the country.
